    Lars lod sig som ung hverve til soldat, siden sproglærer i Dublin og huslærer hos guvenør i Afrika. Herefter drog han til US og gav sig i krigstjeneste, hvor han deltog i Den Nordamerikanske Uafhængighedskrig. Ved underretning om stedfaderens død vendte han tilbage til Norge og giftede sig (1786). Moderen, Johanne Larsdatter, havde efter Hermann Smith's død 1752 giftet sig med Lars Johansen, der overtog stillingen som forvalter på Nes Jernverk.
